Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) was an English novelist and poet. His major novels are mainly set in rural Wessex, a fictional place. 'Far from the Madding Crowd' tells the story of Bathsheba Everdene who has recently moved to Weatherbury as the owner of a farm. There, she is offered a hand in marriage by three men belonging to different social classes. Her decision to marry one of them eventually leads to heartbreak, revenge and tragedy.
