The Phonics First activity books have been written specifically for pre-readers and beginning readers (suggested age 4-7). The series is carefully structured to develop phonemic awareness - the ability to identify individual sounds in words as well as the ability to blend sounds into meaningful words.
In Phonics First Book 3, students use their knowledge of single letter-sound relationships to read simple words. Through a variety of motivational exercises and activities they gradually develop their skills so they can read these words with accuracy and fluency.
The author of the Reading Freedom programme, Hunter Calder, has had extensive experience as a reading teacher, lecturer, teacher trainer and remedial reading consultant. He is the Director of his own diagnostic and learning centre. He received the International Literacy Year Medal of Merit award for the Reading Freedom activity books.
